“If knowledge is the key to power,” Duke Trunkspoon once claimed, “then a good library is a well-fitted janitor's overcoat with really deep pockets.” Although he was clinically mad at the time, Trunkspoon's words reflect the great and long-standing affinity the British people have with libraries. Princess Victoria, however, decided to fashion a coat all of her own.
Whispered as the British Shadow Library, the secret construction a mile beneath the Greenwich Royal Observatory was known only to a select few of the Princess Royal's inner circle. Alleged to have been completed by a Shadow Team of Yeomen Warders led by the supposedly-late Peter Salt, the project utilised state-of-the-art Pumpjacks and noise bafflers to secrete the structure from view and scanning devices. It now contains something close to half a million volumes on its towering shelves, and is curated by Victoria herself and several of her Ladies-in-Waiting. It has even been said a ghostly voice has been heard roaming the stacks, which, according to the Princess, only cements the building's status as a true British library. |
