Rocket ships
Common cosmic conveyances
|
A common sight along the star-ways and char routes of the Fifteen Galaxies, rocket ships are the easiest and cheapest method of cosmic travel without mucking around with wormholes. Based on simple designs stolen from simple aliens, the first rocket ships were arrow-shaped craft made of welded metal and tin, flung into the stars by huge propulsion nets. Later refinements made use of turbine drives to power vessels along the solar winds, such as the Furl Burder turbine drive system and the so-called Howling Engine that made loud rips in the fabric of space-time.
The interior of most rocket ships was a clanking, confusing caterwaul, as many designs often skirted dangerously close to shaking themselves apart the moment they hit hyperspeed. The development of gravity gas ensured a captain kept his boots planted firmly on the flight deck, and technologies like boundary buoys and carrier pigeons became invaluable navigational aids along the High Galaxies. Some of the more unique and idiosyncratic rocket ship designs became famous in their own right: the Doom Organ, housing the devastating Ribald Machine; the Kerata Perang; the grand hyperfleet of Admiral Drakeel; Mimpy, one of the most fearsome warships in history; the tubular Skoptsy, which met its unfortunate end in the Orchard of Scythes; and the Jolly Good, vessel of the great Captain Dashworth. |
